May began with a great party!
My mum turned 60, and to celebrate many of the important women in her life gathered on Martha’s Vineyard. It was so special to be surrounded by such strong, loving, beautiful women, who all had wonderful stories to share about my mummy! Everyone spent their days doing whatever felt right, and we stayed up late in the evenings talking. On Saturday, we helped each other get gussied up, and the inimitable Jaime Hamlin made us an amazing meal – Jaime’s food is always delicious, but I think this was especially so because it was made with love! It was a special party, and a wonderful weekend. More pictures to come. After Mum’s party, I wanted to “get back to normal”. After all everything in April – all of the loss, and travel, and time away from Matthew and Tony and work – I was really craving normalcy and routine. I worked all month to find it, and it was pretty elusive. I think, instead, I’m in a place of personal growth and transition. I don’t really know exactly how to explain it, or even if I want to. When I was in Austin at the end of April I saw a painting which I bought this month. It’s encaustic on salvaged wood and depicts a high diver flipping through the air and about to plunge into the water. I keep looking at him and thinking – yes, that’s me. Airborne, submerged. Being in this place has meant that until recently bags have gone unpacked, laundry has gone unfolded (or unwashed), to-do lists have grown to incredible lengths, and I have cried so much! I think it will be worth it, though. I also get that I’m really lucky to be able to work on myself like this. I’m grateful.
The Airstream came out of hibernation this month! For two weeks (from Mother’s Day Weekend to Memorial Day weekend) it lived down at Horseneck Beach, as is our tradition. We had a moment where we thought to ourselves “gee, everything has been so busy and we have so much to do, maybe we should reconsider the trip” but getting that time away from chores and technology and the crush of everyday city life was SO good! I basically slept the whole first weekend, it was cold and foggy and I had a cold. The second weekend was sunny and gorgeous and we swam and cooked and ate outside and went for walks and visited with friends. The third weekend was brief, but lovely. Matthew worked on the endless list of Airstream projects. He also spent a couple extra nights down there during the week. The weekends were enough for me, though. We needed that time together and away. I love the Airstream!
SPEAKING OF WHICH! We were featured in Airstream Life magazine! They do a little section with reader’s photos so I sent some of our wedding pictures in a few months ago. To my surprise they responded that they wanted me to be on the cover and they interviewed us for an article about Airstreams in weddings! When the edition finally came in the mail this month I was elated – I’m even more proud of the article than I am of the pictures, but I have to say I feel beautiful and sort of famous.
Other things this month: Celebrating Peter’s birthday with a sleepover with his awesome family (my heart did flips watching Matthew play with those kids). Memorial Day barbecues with my friends from home, Matthew’s friends from Mathworks, and the RTQ. We went to see a live performance of Welcome to Night Vale which was cleverly written. Matthew and Stewart finished the month with a trip to Connecticut to see Gilbert Gottfried do Standup.
